astronomy wasn’t her better subject

closed off the darkness
brushed off the lint of the sun
          dropped to the beginning
          squinting as you scream again

she saw the black hole, that bloody sun
  telescope set to see eternity
I told her to stay away
I told her she would never meet me halfway

grimoire stuffed under her arm
  stolen from my sock drawer
          even cotton is sacred
          even flannel is graded

she won’t allow fear to erase her
but she’s got it all wrong
          fear is the replacement
          erasing is the treatment

stepped out into the stars
  candlelight at her feet
and I carried the bell for her
and I lost it all to a star for her
