Someone, or something, has sealed the Bifrost shut: the rainbow bridge used by the Æsir to travel the Nine Realms. Imprisoned, weakened, and unable to act, two sons of Odin request Skadi, the Jotunn-goddess, go to Midgard and recruit heroes to help them find the culprit and save the gods.
In Midgard, half-Ljósálfar mercenary Ragna accepts a contract to protect a secluded temple deep within the mountains. She meets priestess Halla, a woman born with the runes of the ulfhednar on her skin, legendary warriors once in the service of the Allfather. When everything Halla knows goes up in flames, she and Ragna learn that they must become more than bodyguard and ward to shoulder the tasks of reactivating the Bifrost, saving the Nine Realms, and stopping whoever started this mess.

When the Emptying of Olympos came to pass and the gods dispersed from the heavens to find their own paths, Nyx concealed her natural form and hid herself away in the hills of Europe with her adopted, then-toddler son, determined to keep him out of the eyes of any gods and to give him a chance at a normal life.
Ten years later, and a phone call from the past turns Nyx’s self-imposed retirement on its head: those who had shown loyalty to her years ago were now being hunted down and murdered systemically, and rapidly. Left with the decision to either abandon her people and stay hidden with her son, or come out of retirement to awaken old enemies and new threats, the Goddess of Night hopes she has enough strength left in her for one last battle.
