she caught him hiding in the dark
promised he’d stay in place; “we’ll never be apart”
  she once prayed he would be there
  couldn’t imagine the whispers, beware

he shunned the night, held grudges against stars
broke fire against her memoirs
lighting up the wildwoods;
  her home turned to cinders
  she’ll break more than fingers –

doubt cracked her windshield
eternity stepped back, couldn’t make an appeal
  the clouds creeped behind him
  don’t hang on too tight, let it skim;

the occult loved her when the stars faded
she could sleep in its blanket, left alone and jaded
  but what was a human to immortality?
  she would never tell him of that fatality.
